Monetizing Your Blog

“Monetizing your blog” simply means making money from your blog.

A few simple and straightforward ways to monetize are:

  • Earning revenue by placing ads on your blog
  • Becoming an affiliate and sharing links that brings you commission either per click or per sale
  • Selling your own products directly

A lot of ad companies have traffic requirements, so it takes time to build up to that, which means it’s a lot harder to earn that way as a new blogger.

Affiliate marketing is one of the easiest ways to earn because a lot of companies have very low traffic requirements, if any. That’s awesome for new bloggers, since they’re still working to increase traffic.

Affiliate marketing is also low-pressure and easy to increase blogging income since it doesn’t require you to have your own products to sell.

Blogging courses are an awesome way to make money as a blogger. Not only can the course itself help you, but as an affiliate, you’re offering something of high value to other bloggers and creators.

So it’s a win-win for everybody!

Side Note: Don’t ever stop working to increase your blog traffic. You need traffic for pretty much everything. Just because an affiliate program doesn’t have a traffic requirement, the pressure is not off! Keep working at it.

Let’s look at a very specific method of earning (potentially very quickly) by using these blogging courses to make money.

7 Deadly Blogging Tips That Will Destroy Everything

If you’re starting a blog or already have one but want to see it improve, there’s no question you’re researching all the blogging tips in the world. That’s a great place to start. HOWEVER–beware of some blogging tips that will kill all your hard work. Let’s talk about 7 Deadly Blogging Tips That Will Destroy Everything.

7 Deadly Blogging Tips That Will Destroy Everything

While a log of blogging tips are constructive and offer at least some helpful tidbits you can apply to your own blog-building process, not everything that glitters is gold.

That means that some blogging tips are not the greatest. Let’s talk about 7 of the worst ones that are out there–and I’m willing to bet you’ve followed at least one of these, thinking it was a good idea.

I know I did.

And it backfired.

These blogging tips are deadly because they sound good and are advertised with a stunning Pinterest pin. But they are totally discouraging and can kill all your motivation to move forward.

7 Deadly Blogging Tips That Will Destroy Everything

1: Speed Writing Content Is One of the 7 Deadly Blogging Tips That Will Destroy Everything

I’ve seen these posts advertised all over Pinterest. This one made me suspicious from the start. Writing is my thing, so I wasn’t as keen to believe this tip, but I eventually clicked on some posts to read the advice.

I was stunned.

There are blog posts that claim to help you learn how to “speed write” a blog post.

This is a deadly blogging tip. Writing a blog post takes time, effort and planning.

Note: Speed writing is not the same as batching content. Speed writing is when you use techniques to “write posts in 30 minutes” or something of that nature.

In order to have a successful post that goes anywhere at all, you must do a bit of preliminary work, like keyword research, blog structure and content planning, and a thorough outline.

That’s before you ever start writing your actual blog post.

So, tell me, how in the world is it possible to speed write a quality post that will build your blog’s credibility and encourage increased blog traffic?

Speed writing is one of the 7 deadly blogging tips that will destroy everything. The truth is that you need to carefully plan your content, strategically place keywords and phrases, and write high-quality posts.

Discover the game-changing secret to a powerful blog here.

2: Quality Content Doesn’t Matter

I’ve heard it a lot.

SEO, marketing and social media presence matter more than the actual quality of your blog posts.

While quality doesn’t cancel the need for SEO and marketing, a lack of quality will cause your SEO and marketing to backfire.

If your blog’s bounce rate is sky high because people are being driven to your blog with killer marketing strategies but hate your content, your blog is doomed.

Pinterest and Google will figure it out, and you’ll lose ranking.

Focus on quality FIRST, and then apply the best SEO and marketing strategies so your growing audience enjoys what you write and doesn’t bouce.

3: Grow Your Blog Into A Huge Business In A Short Time

This is one of the 7 deadly blogging tips that will destroy everything because it’s one of the most discouraging things to read–ever!

How many times have you seen a pin titled “How I Grew My Blog Into A 6-Figure Business in Less Than A Year”, or something similar?

Talk about a kick to the gut.

The reality is that most blogs take a good, long while to really get going. I’m not saying it’s impossible to earn 6 figures in a matter of months, but is that blogger really telling the whole story?

Chances are that after a little digging, you’ll find that that wasn’t their first blog. It was probably a second, third or maybe even fourth blog. It might have even been an existing blog they purchased from someone else.

Others may have invested thousands into hiring staff that helped market and optimize their blog for them.

Most of the rest of us are building our blogs from scratch with the extra few bucks we have left over after we’ve paid the bills.

Don’t get discouraged, friend. Building a blog takes time–a lot of time. It’s the same as building a business, and it’s normal to expect it to take a few years–maybe even several years–to really fly.

Keep climbing. You’re on the right track.

4: Passion Is Everything

Passion is important. But it’s not everything.

Building a blog is no different than building a business. You can’t build a business on passion alone.

It takes good decisions, planning, structure, time, tears, heaps of frustration, and the grit of a bulldog to build something from nothing.

In order to get your blog really going, you need:

  • A blog outline and goals
  • Blog structure
  • Investment of time and money into the right things
  • Careful planning
  • Good blog setup (with Siteground)
  • Strong content
  • Marketing and SEO
  • Strong work ethic
  • Enough backbone to fail and learn to dust off and keep going
  • The ability to forget how to quit
7 Deadly Blogging Tips That Will Destroy Everything

5: Niche Doesn’t Matter

Yes it does.

This is probably the most annoying of the 7 deadly blogging tips that will destroy everything.

You cannot simply dream up some random blog topic and start writing.

While any blog can become established and gain traffic, certain niches simply perform better:

  • Food
  • Finance
  • Health and Fitness
  • Lifestyle (ie mom blogs or travel blogs)
  • Fashion

These are some of the most successful niches. It’s easier to get somewhere when you choose a high-performing niche.

If you have a passion for something less popular, that’s great! Just start your blog with the understanding that it might take more work and effort to see results.

Be prepared to adapt your strategy accordingly. If you have an unconventional niche, come up with some unconventional and creative ways to market to the right audience.

6: Fake Everybody Out & Look Experienced

Okay. You can’t do this.

First of all, anyone with any sort of knowledge can research your blog and find out just how experienced you are.

The idea that you can somehow hide where you are in your journey as a blogger is not only false, it’s a good way to lose your readers’ trust.

When it comes to blogging, or anything, really, transparency is everything. Not only is it honest and relatable, it’s incredibly appealing to readers.

People feel like they can connect with you when you just come clean about where you are and that they can trust you.

If you started your blog 3 months ago, it’s probably not a good idea to create and sell a blogging course yet.

You’ll get there, and you’ll get there a lot faster if you’re open and approachable about your journey.

Doesn’t that take off so much pressure!? Blogging can suddenly become fun again!

Are you mentally sabotaging your own success? Find out here!

7: Make Thousands In 6 Months

Read this and be encouraged.

For 99% of us, this simply doesn’t happen. We are all in the same boat, stumbling and bumbling about while we discover and learn how to become better bloggers and gain traction.

Achieving a successful, money making blog doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a weird, maze-like journey of sorting out the dead ends from the paths that take us further in a world of ever-changing algorithms, strategy and advancing technology.

The potential is endless, but it’s still a lot of work and it simply takes time.

So stop being so hard on yourself.

Keep On Blogging

Now that you know 7 deadly blogging tips that will destroy everything, I hope you’ve gained confidence and encouragement to keep going.

Chances are you’re right where you need to be, and if you just keep going, you’ll start seeing some serious results.

5 Powerfully Simple Ways I Tripled My Monthly Blog Views

Like you, I was that blogger who was pouring over Pinterest, reading every blog post about how to increase my blog traffic so I could finally have a money making blog. And then, amazingly… it happened! Let me share 5 powerfully simple ways I tripled my monthly blog views… in less than 30 days!

5 Powerfully Simple Ways I Tripled My Monthly Blog Views

5 Powerfully Simple Ways I Tripled My Monthly Blog Views

This article contains affiliate links which means I’ll earn a commission via your clickthrough or purchases made at no extra cost to you.

I don’t like taking long on preliminaries and I know you’re looking for ways to massively increase your blog traffic, so let’s just get right to it, shall we?

How Did It Happen?

I’d been building my MamaFearless blog for about 2 years (apart from being a full-time mom of 2 under 2 and helping my husband build his business) and just wasn’t satisfied with the results I was getting.

I was seeing around 4000-5000 monthly views and it seemed like I couldn’t break out of that rut.

One day, I sat down and wrote a post that I felt would really help my fellow mamas, and then I followed all the steps I’m about to share with you.

You can imagine my surprise when I watched my blog views quickly climb into the hundreds within a few minutes of pinning a specific Pinterest pin on that post.

Then it climbed higher… then it reached thousands.

To this day I’m seeing 13,000+ monthly views, and the stats are climbing!

I’ve finally broken through!

I’m going to share my exact strategy with you in 5 Powerfully Simple Ways I Tripled My Monthly Blog Views.

5 Powerfully Simple Ways I Tripled My Monthly Blog Views

1: Proper Blog Setup

Setting up your blog properly is extremely important. It’s not just about going through all the steps to get it launched, it’s also about your marketing plan and your strategy.

You need to be self hosted. Skipping this step will cause you to not be able to monetize, which basically means “game over.”

I originally started with Bluehost and it was great. It’s the most popular hosting site out there.

Eventually, as my blog grew and my traffic increased, I ended up switching to SiteGround.

My page speed and overall site performance improved drastically, bringing my bounce rate down and making me more popular on Google.

If you need help setting up your blog, you can read my step-by-step guide on the basics of a powerful blog setup. Once you’re set up properly, you’ll be able to monetize your blog, the first step to making money blogging!

2: Strong Content

Planning for a massive increase in blog traffic is wonderful, but you need to make sure you have killer content for your visitors to read. If you don’t, this is all kinds of pointless.

I chose to write a blog post on my MamaFearless blog that was in high demand. That meant doing some research to see what readers were looking for.

Not only did I choose a great topic, I also wrote it in an engaging way. I grew my email subscriber list from less than 200 to over 1300 in less than 3 months!

My post was strong, written well, and used language that drew readers in, converting them.

If you’d like to see the same results on your blog, you can learn all my writing tricks in my 1-hour blog writing course. Trust me, it changes everything!

3: Beautiful Pinterest Pins

Okay, so I had this amazing blog post written and polished, but it needed some pinnable graphics.

I took time to create about 3 beautiful Pinterest pins for my post, and I made sure to follow all the tricks I knew about creating viral Pinterest pins (you can find out how I create viral pins with this easy guide).

It’s so important that you understand I took time to develop my brand. I have a specific style and I’ve created a brand kit using Canva.

This gives my pins a recognizable brand that people associate with me. It made all the difference.

You can troubleshoot your pins and fix them in this no-nonsense guide.

4: Consistent Pinning

Once I had my pretty pins created, I pinned them on Pinterest, and then I scheduled them to be repinned on Tailwind.

While the blog post title, killer content and pretty graphics attracted those views, Tailwind is what still keeps it all alive.

Honestly, without Tailwind, I’d be working five times harder to keep up those stats.

I simply don’t have the time for that.

There are 2 ways to really thrive on Tailwind. 1: Use their pin scheduler consistently and follow their recommendations. 2: Join Tailwind tribes and pin consistently there, allowing tribe members to get your content to a wider network.

Both are so important. Using both is what brings the results.

You can try Tailwind out for yourself for free and see how you like it (you’ll love it).

5 Powerfully Simple Ways I Tripled My Monthly Blog Views

5: Fresh Content

Pinterest made it clear in 2020 that they favor fresh content. Since Pinterest is the blogger’s bread and butter, it’s important to follow their advice.

That’s why I write fresh posts pretty regularly (hint hint).

It’s also why I create fresh pins for my posts regularly, too. Instead of repinning the same pins over and over, I create new, fresh pins for my content.

I’ve noticed that Pinterest favors those fresh pins and they rank higher (especially if my previous pins have done well).

Please keep in mind that all of this content (blog post, graphics, blog site) is all SEO friendly.

Find out how to make your Pinterest Pins and Blog Posts SEO friendly so you can rank highly.

I use Yoast to make sure everything is search engine optimized. That way Pinterest and Google can find me.

Freebie: I also include my keywords and phrases in every description box, title, alt description, hashtags, file names–anything and everything.

Don’t Rush and Don’t Get Lazy

Blogging is a business. It takes time, effort, and your best. Seriously.

I’ve given it 1000% to get it to where it is. It still took time, but the results are there and growing fast. Furthermore, the more traffic you see, the more conversions and the more you earn.

Now that you know these 5 Powerfully Simple Ways I Tripled My Monthly Blog Views, it’s important that you follow them all, and give every step 1000% too.

10 Unbelievably Simple Steps to A Crazy Viral Pinterest Pin

Before You Create Your Viral Pin

It’s important to know before you get started that your pin can go viral for days, but your blog post that your pin links to had better be good.

It will severely hurt your blog and SEO ranking if you get hundreds to thousands of clicks a day, only to find that everyone leaves after a few seconds.

To make sure your blog post is ready for a viral pin, find out what your blog is missing and how to fix it.

Already have some great pins you want to go viral? You can troubleshoot your existing pins using my guide in 15 Reasons Why Pinterest Isn’t Working For Your Blog.

15 Reasons Why Pinterest Isn't Working for Your Blog

Okay, let’s go create that viral pin!

1: Download Canva

Since all my viral pins were created using Canva, I’m going to share that exact process with you.

You can download Canva for free. You can also create all your viral Pinterest pins using only their free features.

2: Select Your Pin Size

On Canva, select “Create a New Design”. You can select “Pinterest Pin” and it will automatically put your canvas in the right pin size ratio (it’s currently 1000 x 1500 px).

Canva stays up to date with Pinterest’s best practices, and will keep the “Pinterest Pin” template in the recommended size for you.

You can also select “Custom Dimensions” and put in your own. Just make sure the image is 2:3 ratio.

You can try:

  • 650 x 1260
  • 700 x 1200
  • 1000 x 1500

3: Select A High-Quality Image

Pins perform better when they have a high-quality image in the background. You can use free photos on Canva or download a stock photo from another source.

You can also use elements from Canva. Cartoons and animated characters are currently popular on Pinterest.

Hey! Did you know that I have a step-by-step video course you can take to learn how to design a viral Pinterest pin? Literally watch it appear before your eyes! Check it out here!

4: Select 1 Display Font and 1 Sans Serif Font

Don’t make your pin too busy.

Use up to 2 fonts until you gain more experience on what fonts work well.

It’s not just about each font individually, but how they look together. A beautiful and eye-catching font combo will get a lot more clicks.

A bad combo will get your pin scrolled right over.

Try these Canva Font Combos to Start Out:

These are all free fonts on Canva.

NOTICE: The letters are in all caps, except for Brusher. All caps tend to perform better in most cases.

Do not put your brush or scroll fonts in all caps. It makes them impossible to read.

5: Choose Catchy, Powerful Wording

This is key!

Swap out weak, ineffective verbs for emotional power words. You want to grab your reader’s attention.

P.S. The fonts for this pin are Anton and Alata. Both are free!

6: Use A Solid Background Overlay

Pins with photos perform better, but the words must stand out.

To make it pop, use a solid background overlay. Go to the elements section of Canva and select a desired shape.

Don’t cover the entire photo, but take enough space so that your words are the main focus of the pin.

10 Unbelievably Simple Steps to A Crazy Viral Pinterest Pin

7: Make Key Words and Focus Phrases POP

Use a solid box and invert the colors on your key words or phrases to grab attention.

Those words will shout off the page and draw the eye to your pin.

You can also make those words a different color or outline them for the same effect.

8: Include Your Brand Identity

Avoid ghost pins! They undermine all your hard work.

If you don’t have a professional logo (you probably should), at least put your domain name somewhere on the pin.

Tip: Your brand identity should go in the same place every time, on every pin. If you aren’t using a professional logo, make sure you use the same font and colors for consistent brand identity.

9: Write an Epic Pin Description

If your pin is gorgeous and perfect in every way, but doesn’t have a description, it will go nowhere.

Every one of these 10 Unbelievably Simple Steps to A Crazy Viral Pinterest Pin are crucial, but this one is massively important.

Include your keywords in the title and the description (just don’t stuff). Make your description conversational and friendly, and intriguing at the same time.

Use straightforward hashtags. Don’t be too clever or Pinterest won’t rank your pin.

10: Download Tailwind

No, this is not a Tailwind plug so you sign up and then I leave you hanging.

You need Tailwind to help you pin regularly and at prime times.

The secret is in Tailwind Tribes.

10 Unbelievably Sad Ways You Just Killed Your Pinterest Pin

Should You Be Aiming For Viral Pins?

Okay, so I know we get stars in our eyes when we talk about viral pins. Our eyes kinda glaze over and we dream of the day our pin finally goes viral.

Is this a thing, like really?

Well, yes. I’ve had a couple viral pins on my Mama Fearless account and it’s a wonderful feeling.

Here’s what I have to say about it.

Landing a viral pin is kinda like winning the lottery, with slightly better odds. Well, okay, much better odds.

Do all the things you know to do to win that viral pin, but instead of always hoping for that viral pin, learn how to create solid, well-performing pins.

The viral pins will come. But for now, it’s those consistent, high-performing pins that become your bread and butter.

They’ll bring you a steady flow of reliable traffic and help you steadily build your blog.

And don’t worry. Like I said, those viral pins will eventually come!

Psst! Share this pin! Thanks for the love!

10 Unbelievably Sad Ways You Just Killed Your Pinterest Pin

Let’s talk about how and why your pin didn’t go so well, and then let’s fix it!

1: Not Enough Keyword Research

This one is the most boring of all 10 Unbelievably Sad Ways You Just Killed Your Pinterest Pin, so let’s just get it out of the way.

When you’re creating your pin, you need to have specific keywords in mind that relate to your niche and the topic of your blog post.

The title of your pin should closely match the verbiage on the graphic. It doesn’t have to be word-for-word, but it does need to be pretty close.

Which means the words you choose to put on the actual pin graphic should also contain keywords.

To find out which keywords perform best, go up to the Pinterest search bar and start typing a phrase related to whatever your pin is about. You’ll see several suggestions pop up.

Those suggestions are the most frequently searched in that particular topic. This is a good place to start to discover keywords.

10 Reasons Why Your Pinterest Pin Flopped

2: Poor Description

Not only does the title need keywords, the description does, too. Your pin description should be written naturally in flowing language that is easy to read.

Make sure the top keywords of your blog post are included in that description. You can also include a few hashtags as well.

Don’t go overboard on hashtags. This isn’t Instagram. Pinterest won’t recognize ultra-clever tags and phrases. Just be direct and clear in your phrasing.

3: Bad Quality Image

This one is a biggie.

When you’re designing your pin, you need to be completely sure that the image you’re using is high quality.

Pins with images perform better than those without. So, yes, use an image.

Just make sure it’s crispy clear. If it’s poor quality, that pin is going nowhere.

10 Unbelievably Sad Ways You Just Killed Your Pinterest Pin Good Quality Image vs Bad Quality Image

Use Canva to design your pins. It’s extremely user-friendly and even the free version has nice, high-quality images that you can use on your pins.

4: Too Busy

This is huge.

Images with warm tones and contrasting colors outperform other types of pins. Keep this in mind when selecting an image.

However.

If you select a vibrant image and you plan to design a text overlay (which also performs well on Pinterest), you need to make sure your text overlay stands out.

If your image is so bright and so vibrant that it hurts my eyes, I’m going to keep scrolling.

Keep it balanced.

Refrain from using a bazillion fonts. Stick to around 2 fonts–preferably a display font of some kind and then a Sans Serif font for your minor details. A 3rd font is okay if cautiously–and I mean cautiously–used.

10 Reasons Your Pinterest Pin Flopped

5: Wrong Size

I won’t take a long time here. If you’ve been researching Pinterest pins, you’ve read this a thousand times, I’m sure.

Keep your pins vertical, not horizontal. Pinterest best practices states that pins should have a 2:3 ratio (which means the size should be in thirds, and the length is 1/3 longer than the width).

For 2020, they stated that 1000 x 1500 pixels is the preferred size.

You can get away with longer pins, but keep in mind Pinterest has stated extra long pins will be cut off, ultimately decreasing its performance. If you can find a good length that is eye-catching without getting cut off on a viewer’s screen, that pin can potentially perform well.

Some of my highest-performing pins are 650 x 1260, 700 x 1200, and the classic 1000 x 1500.

Canva makes it very easy to design beautiful pins in any size you’d like.

6: Bad Links

Yeah, it’s obvious, I know, but if your pin’s link to your website doesn’t work…

That’s just all bad.

Before you ever publish your pin, always, always double-check the link to make sure it’s complete and actually directs the viewer to the correct place.

10 Reasons Why Your Pinterest Pin Flopped

7: Irrelevant Board

If your beautiful pin is about a healthy lifestyle and you pin it to your “entrepreneurship” board, it’s not going to do well.

Pinning your pin to an irrelevant board confuses Pinterest’s algorithm and significantly impacts your SEO rankings.

Doing this continually will hurt your overall Pinterest ratings.

If you’re struggling to find places to pin your content, just create new, relevant boards.

8: Your Pin is Hard to Read

A Pinterest Pin that Is Hard to Read vs A Pin that Is Easy to Read

Pins with text overlay do well. But we want to be able to read what you’ve written on that pin.

Your pin offers to solve a specific problem. It should attract the eye, and then attract the viewer’s interest.

If the viewer can’t easily read the pin because the font is not the centerpiece of the pin, they’re moving on.

Your text should be large enough to capture the viewer’s attention immediately, without making the viewer fight to get past the image or graphics.

Your image should be either faint enough that the text pops, or the text should be in a solid box that makes it stand out from the pin.

9: Bad Timing

Your pin can be perfect, but on Pinterest, timing is everything. Your niche has a particular day or time of day when it’s going to perform the best.

Yeah. Trying to figure that out on your own can get very interesting. And stressful. Let’s not forget stressful

Using Tailwind to schedule your pins will solve that problem. Tailwind has already done the research for you, which means that it knows what time to pin your pin for optimal results.

By scheduling your pins through Tailwind, you’re setting that pin up to go out at the right time for your niche where it will get the most visibility.

Try Tailwind for Free

10: No Brand Identity

If your pin is absolutely gorgeous, but it’s a ghost pin without any sort of identity, well, you’ve just undermined all that gorgeousness.

No Brand Identity on Your Pinterest Pin

People want to know about the brand, company or person that published the pin they’re clicking on.

I mentioned in my article about 15 reasons why Pinterest isn’t working for your blog that your logo is important–in the right place.

Your logo should be somewhere on every pin you post, in a tidy, well-fitting place.

It doesn’t need to take over the pin. Keep it small and out of the way, but easily found so people get to know your brand.

After awhile, people will start clicking on your pins because they recognize your brand. That’s when you’re breaking through the walls and creating trust between your audience and your brand.

Keep Learning

The art of Pinterest marketing is pretty in-depth, but this is a good place to start.

If you’re a beginning blogger all this SEO and Pinterest marketing talk can get overwhelming.

Don’t try to take it all on at once. Just focus on these 10 reasons why your Pinterest pin flopped and start working to improve one thing at a time.

It becomes less confusing as you grow and learn and gain more experience.

Don’t let this intimidate you! If you need some extra help, don’t hesitate to reach out and contact me! I’ll help you any way I can!

Happy hustling!

What Your Blog Is Missing And How To Fix It

5 No-Nonsense Steps To Start A Successful Blog

Ready to start up your blog? Maybe you’re not starting a blog, per say, but you own a business and you need a website. If you’re in the second category–you still need this info! Yes, I’m focusing on 5 No-Nonsense Steps To Start A Successful Blog, but these 5 points are important for any online business!

I’m an affiliate marketer, which means I’ll earn commission via your click-through or purchase at no additional cost to you.

Warning: Don’t skim the table of contents and think, “I’ve read this all before.” Sure, you’ve seen these 5 steps, probably a million times, but here’s the difference between Earning SAHM and other posts: I’m brutally honest.

This isn’t a fluff piece to get you to sign up for Bluehost (Don’t do it. Use Siteground.). This is a legit list to help you get started correctly.

Let’s do this.

5 No Nonsense Steps to Start A Blog

5 No-Nonsense Steps To Start A Successful Blog

Out with the nonsense, in with the brutally honest stuff.

1: Nail Down Your Audience

This step is listed in THOUSANDS of blogs and it really is important. How many times have you read, “find your audience…?”

Here’s the deal–don’t just find your audience. Nail it doooown.

Here’s an example. You’re a fitness blogger. Or, for the sake of my “category 2” peeps, you’re selling fitness equipment online.

Who likes fitness? Basically everyone. But you can’t write to every single person on the planet who likes fitness. It’s bad business–not to mention impossible.

So you need to nail it down. Who are you writing to?

The best way to think about it is to start at your goal and work backwards. What is the goal of your website, blog, post…?

Let’s just say you’re selling an exercise machine. Is it designed for women, men or both?

Who’s most likely to buy in–the already-fit human who wants to add something extra to their routine? Someone who wants to lose 25 pounds? A person who wants to tone up in a particular area?

Narrow that thing down, and then include all your potential buyers.

When you’re creating a blog, you need a specific kind of reader in mind–like 2 or more descriptive words.

For example, my blog, Mama Fearless, is dedicated to first-time moms and expectant mothers. But what else?

I’ve nailed down my audience to first-time moms and expectant mothers who need encouragement about pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood.

BAM! It’s not a baby-items blog, a review blog (though it contains those elements). It’s an inspirational blog to boost confidence.

Here are some words that I used to nail down my audience:

  • First-Time
  • Expectant
  • Encouragement
  • Christian-Based
  • Infants and Toddlers

See? Gotta get specific.

5 Steps to Start A Successful Blog

2: Choose the RIGHT Niche

Ugh. This one frustrates me. I see this one everywhere, too. “Choose your niche.” Period.

That’s like starting a sentence with, “This amazing…” and then walking off.

Huh?

There is so much more to choosing your niche than just choosing your niche.

I know you really love nachos, but I hate to break it to you. Good luck creating a successful, money-making blog entirely about nachos.

Food blog? Oh, yeah!

But nachos only? Wah wah waaah.

You might be so passionate about nachos, and maybe you even have 47 nacho recipes. But you’re going to have one crazy massive climb ahead of you to make decent money writing about nachos, unless you’ve got a secret the rest of us don’t.

If you do, then what are you doing reading my blog? Seriously, please refer me to yours!

Do your research. Find out which niches do well, and if your idea fits in those categories, you’re off to a good start.

Maybe just keep a journal about nachos or write a recipe book while you choose a better niche for your blog.

3: Write Good Content

Can I just say that I’ve actually read blogs that say you don’t have to be a good writer to make money blogging?

Sabotage!

Yes, you do! In fact, you must be a good writer to make money blogging. Of all 5 steps to start a successful blog, this one is your bread and butter.

You might be selling thee greatest gym equipment of all time, but if you can’t spell equipment or construct a decent, persuasive article, you’re toast.

Yes, marketing, yes, SEO, yes design and creativity.

AFTER GOOD CONTENT (yes, I yelled it).

I care about your blog because it’s part of you and it’s serious. If you’re creating a blog or website to make money, it’s your baby, your dream and you’re probably already working hard at it.

That’s why I’m not brushing this under the rug. Blogging is writing. That’s the medium you’re using to get your art out there.

If you need help writing, take my 1-hour course for writing basics to get you started. It’s 100x less the cost of most of the courses out there and it will help you with some writing and blogging basics to improve your content.

Take my course!

If you can’t write well and don’t care to improve, try vlogging.

Bottom line, bloggers need to be able to write killer content.

4: Engage with Your Readers

This isn’t the Wizard of Oz. You’re not some enigmatic figment that people love to follow and buy your stuff.

Much better than that, you’re a human. Talking to other humans.

That means you’re building relationships around trust, so that when you recommend your products or publish something, people take your word for it.

So what’s your plan to engage with your readers?

Building an email list is a great method. Keep it real, talk to your audience, and encourage them to get involved.

They’ve got great minds and valuable input. Ask them what they want to see, what works for them and create discussions.

I recently asked my Mama Fearless readers to tell me what they wanted to see on the blog and I received some great feedback. I thanked them individually for their response and showed appreciation for their ideas by writing back.

One of my subscribers literally wrote to me, “Wow, I feel special that you’ve taken the time to write back…”

More than a pageview, a reader, or a sale, I just made a friend. 🙂

Found out what your blog is missing and how to fix it.

What Your Blog Is Missing And How To Fix It

5: Monetize

Now we get to the fun stuff. Who doesn’t like getting a paycheck? Seriously!

No, but really. This is super important. You’re not doing this just to play around (if you are, you’re reading the wrong blog my friend. We’re a bunch of serious bloggers around here). You’re building a business.

You need a plan to monetize. How are you going to make your money? Do you have your own products to sell? Are you an affiliate? A coach?

It’s important that you have an outline on how your blog is going to make money. The avenue you’re taking to get that dough is going to determine the steps you take to be successful.

If you’re selling your own products (like how I sell my blog writer’s course), you might want to be careful about placing too many ads or affiliate links on your site that will distract people from your own product.

If you’re an affiliate, you need to make sure you’re doing a great job honestly reviewing products and recommending products with integrity (come on, don’t sell your soul, here).

What about coaching? If ever engagement and building relationships was important, it’s crucial for the coaching business!

Write out your goals. Then turn it into a plan. Finally, make that a plan of action, with all the steps you’re going to take.

Stick To It, My Friend!

These 5 steps to start a successful blog are only the very beginning of your business.

The better you do and the more solid your foundation, the more successful your blog will be in the long run.

Remember, this is building a business. It’s not a get-rich-quick-scheme. It’s a marathon, one step after another, and it’s not always easy.

That’s why not every blog makes it. If you’re serious, and you’re willing, you can totally make good money blogging.

Now, for those that are set up nicely with one, solid income, that’s great! But, the majority of us can really benefit from a two income household.

Having 2 incomes makes it easier to…

Do I really need to write the list?

Honestly, having 2 incomes makes life easier. Moms creating and growing a business can totally make that happen!

3: Mompreneurship Fills A Much Needed Niche

This is a biggie–especially for those mom bloggers out there.

Women are graduating into motherhood every single day. The need for experienced moms who are willing to lend a hand and share their knowledge will always exist.

Yes, there are a lot of mom blogs out there, but honestly? There’s a reason.

5: Our Kids Need Their Mamas

This one is so important! Mompreneurship is a winning idea because it gives mama the freedom to pursue her goals, but it leaves room for the most important thing in her life.

Her family.

How many of you mamas out there dream of creating a business without having to sacrifice the “Mom” part of Mompreneur?

For me, staying home with my two sons means the whole entire world to me!

My husband is an entrepreneur and started his business from the ground up. Totally not easy work–in fact, it’s been straight up hard at times.

But the hard work and things we’ve learned has inspired me to pursue goals as well.

It’s also shown me that it is totally possible to build up something and still prioritize the things that truly matter.

Our family truly matters, and it’s worth every sacrifice.

I know you feel me–that’s why you’ve earned the title of “Mompreneur”. Wear it proudly, Sister!

6: Mompreneurship Is Moldable

One of the coolest things about Mompreneurship, and one of the 10 Reasons Why Mompreneurship Is A Winning Idea is that it’s completely pliable–into whatever you make it.

Looking for a side gig to lend a financial hand? Dreaming of creating a full-fledged business?

That’s the beauty of it. It becomes whatever you make it.

It takes some serious work, grit and sacrifice too. But doesn’t everything that’s worth having?

7: Moms Already Have What It Takes By Default

You were pregnant for ten months, give or take. You carried a child and watched your body morph to accommodate a growing human.

Then you went into labor, experiencing contractions and a childbirth experience. There’s nothing like that in the world.

After that, you brought Baby home and started your postpartum healing… all while getting up at all hours of the night, feeding your baby, wearing spit up and poo and whatever else.

You’ve sacrificed sleep, time, quiet, food most likely, personal space, and tons more, all for the simple reason that you love your baby and you’re happy to do whatever you need to do for them.

After all that, you’d better not ever doubt that you can start a blog or build a business!

Sister, you’ve already accomplished some amazing things. You’ve totally proven that you’ve got what it takes to reach for those dreams.

Feeling inspired yet?

8: Moms Understand the Patience Needed to Build A Business

One of the most-needed virtues of all moms is patience. Seriously. And it’s probably the hardest thing to maintain.

Raising children is all about hanging on to every shred of patience inside you, all while your littles laugh and tromp all over it.

You know that if you have the patience to raise those babies, you have the patience to create something, too.

Things don’t happen overnight. It takes hard work and lots of time (it takes 18+ years to raise an adult).

Mompreneurship is no different. It certainly doesn’t take 18 years!

9: Moms Can Fulfill Dreams and Goals While Maintaining Priorities

Because you’re Mama, you’re irreplaceable to your kids, and you’ve grown used to that.

You understand your value in their life, even if they don’t yet.

Having that wisdom and total love for your baby is what gives you the ability to prioritize.

Mompreneurship is a winning idea because you can pursue dreams without sacrificing your place in your children’s life.

10: Mompreneurship Sets An Example

It’s not just about what you create for you, it’s what you create for the future.

What kinds of things are you setting in motion now that your children will see in 10 years?

How do you view yourself and your abilities? How will your children view you? What are you teaching them?

Mompreneurship is another beautiful way to exemplify that anything is possible and anyone is capable.

It’s a way to forge new paths and yet never let go of the hands of the ones you love. Mompreneurship is a way of working toward goals and yet keeping your place as nurturer, lover, giver… mama.

So Go Create

You have absolutely everything it takes as a mama.

Do you have that dream written down? Perhaps you’re already in the trenches of making it happen.

Wherever you are, just remember that what you’re striving for isn’t some far-out notion. It’s the real deal, deserves credit and respect.

It’s not easy. It takes work and sometimes a good amount of frustrated tears. But it’s all totally worth it.

More power to you, Momprenuer!

Blogging is a powerful way to share experience, education, and lifestyle. It’s also a great way to earn extra income. Before you take off on all that, though, it’s important that your blog gets started correctly. Here are 5 Life Saving Tips on Starting A Powerful Blog Successfully.

Before I get going on those tips, there are a few things you need to know:

  • Blogging is not a get-rich-quick scheme
  • It takes hard work and consistency to create a successful blog
  • You need to be open to learning and growing. You don’t have it all together just yet!

If you’re serious about blogging you can make a go of it. If you’re just drumming up ways to try and quickly earn K’s while sleeping in and being lazy, you should think twice before investing your time into this.

1: Choose Your Niche

A niche (pronounced “neesh”) is basically the subject or main theme of your blog.

This is going to directly control who your audience is and how you market your blog.

Your niche can be anything, from raising chickens to underwater basket weaving.

However, you should choose your niche wisely.

Not all blog niches are as likely to be successful.

Think about what you want to write about. If you want to make money blogging, you need to research your niche.

Is it a topic that’s in high demand? If you’re passionate about it and don’t care whether or not you make money from it then write away and have fun!

But if you’re planning on turning your blog into a small business, make sure your niche is a carefully chosen business move.

Psst! Share this pin! Thanks for the love!

2: Domain Name

A domain name is the address of your blog. It’s what you type into the URL bar (ie: earningsahm.com).

This is another decision you need to make carefully.

Think of your domain name as the title of a book you’re trying to publish. The title has to be catchy, something people will remember, and not overly complicated.

It’s your blog’s identity.

Kind of a big deal, right?

Take your sweet time choosing a domain name. It will be face of your blog from now on.

3: Blogging Platform

A blogging platform is the site where you create and customize your blog. This should also be a carefully-made choice as well.

I started out on a free blogging platform with my first blog and ended up creating a nightmare.

Make sure your blogging platform is focused on helping your monetize your blog and gives you the options and freedoms to turn your blog into a business.

WordPress is one of the most popular blogging platforms and it’s compatible with basically everything. For beginners, it’s a good place to start.

4: Hosting Platform

A hosting platform is the site that essentially enables you to monetize your blog.

In a nutshell, a hosting service, like Bluehost or SiteGround, grants you the real estate to run your blog online.

By setting up your blog with a host from the get-go you save yourself the trouble of having to transfer over later–which you will need to do if you ever wish to grow your blog or online business.

You can set up your blog through SiteGround for just a few dollars a month and get all the services you need to start out.

5: Blog Outline

This is where being passionate about your blog niche comes into play.

When you’re starting your blog, you need to be able to plan enough content to last a good long while.

So, is your niche something you can write about like that? And no, not just flimsy little puff pieces. You need to be able to write good, meaty content for your readers.

Before you take off working, creating and investing, you need to have a good solid plan from here going forward.

  • What is the focus of your blog?
  • Where do you want to see your blog go?
  • Can you write 57,000 articles on your topic? (Okay, maybe not 57,000 but a hefty amount for sure!)
  • Do you love the topic enough that you won’t fizzle out? Believe me, you’ll feel like quitting enough times without getting bored of your topic!
