Without any sort of motivation, it’s nearly impossible to maintain any sort of commitment for a length of time.

Especially when you aren’t seeing results–and believe me, there are times when you get zero results.

Whether it’s a blog, a local business, an online store, or any other sort of business, it’s going to take time to build.

A solid, successful business simply does not happen over night. Or in a week… or month… or even a year.

That’s why staying motivated is so important. You are everything about your business, so you’ve got to take care of you, too, and motivation is a major part of that.

But you don’t need me to remind you. That’s why you’re here. So let’s talk about how to stay motivated as an entrepreneur.

1: Remember Why You Ever Started

Why did you decide to start your business in the first place? Was it a passion for a specific thing, or a need you saw in society?

May it was a love for a specific hobby or talent that you just knew could be something great.

What was that one thing that made you think, “I can totally do this?”

It’s time to bring it back.

It’s time to remember what you loved and why you felt this business was the right path to take.

Pull from whatever motivated you from the beginning, remember and relive it 100%. Bring back all the feels.

Renewed passion won’t be far behind.

2: What Are You Striving To Achieve As An Entrepreneur?

It’s important to look back and remember, but it’s just as important to look ahead, too!

What is your purpose for starting your business? Are you striving for financial freedom for your family? More time? How about making a living doing what you love?

Don’t lose sight of the ultimate goal of what you’re working so hard to achieve.

Here are some ideas for visual reminders and motivation:

  1. Print some pictures that represent your top three ultimate goals and create a vision board
  2. Find that one phrase that speaks to you and put it on your coffee mug or your work notebook
  3. Hang a motivational canvas at your work space that represents where you’re going

Keep the destination in plain sight!

3: Watch Your Mentors and Your Successful Peers

Nothing is more motivating than watching someone you look up to talk about what they achieved and how they achieved it.

This is one my husband still does regularly. He follows several professionals in his industry and watching their success seriously motivates him.

Without slipping into comparing and critiquing yourself, or berating yourself for not being where they are, watch what your mentors are doing.

How are they achieving their level of success? They’re likely talking about it, too.

If you want what they’ve got, do what they’ve done to get there. Follow their techniques, and then fine tune them to your own journey.

4: Remember All Your Successes So Far

As you are working and building, it’s easy for discouragement to settle in after awhile–especially if you hit a plateau and aren’t seeing results.

Those are the times when it’s so important to remember all the small successes and the goals you’ve achieved up to this point.

We start feeling like failures and then all of a sudden it’s so easy to forget everything we’ve actually done well since we started.

There were times when my husband would feel like the business just wasn’t going anywhere. I understood him–I felt the same way!

That was when we went back and looked at the numbers. We took a long look at how far we’d come and what we’d actually achieved.

We’d also read the kind feedback Adam had received, which really helped us remember that things were going right.

Just because things are slow moving doesn’t mean it’s not working.

5: Forget How to Quit

As long as giving up is one of your options, you’ll always have a chain attached from the place you started to you.

The idea that you can just quit when things get rough will recondition your perspective and damage the resolve that is crucial for success.

A successful business takes the “do or die” mentality.

The biggest test is when things get hard–like, really hard–and what you decide to do.

Every time you decide to press on despite your challenges, you’re building more endurance.

Creating a successful business from the ground up takes a special kind of grit–the kind of grit that holds fast in the middle of hardships.

You know how important it is to remain motivated.

Now what? What can you actually do to stay that way?

Here is a list of tips to help you stay motivated on the daily:

  • Place visual reminders in your work space, on your phone, and other places you commonly see every day
  • Download a daily motivation app that gives you daily doses of motivation in quotes, phrases, or other encouraging ways
  • Listen to motivational podcasts
  • Listen to podcasts of successful people in your industry as they share their journey
  • Read books that encourage you and remind you just how far you can go (I recommend The Magic of Thinking Big)
  • Form a circle of friends that encourage you and believe in you
  • Keep a journal or list of milestones in your entrepreneurship journey, successes and achievements so you can go back and motivate yourself later
  • Look at and revisit your goals often
  • Do your part to fight off lethargy with diet, movement, and plenty of water
  • Establish a theme song that gets you totally pumped and ready to take on anything. Don’t be afraid to play it on repeat!

Remember to take care of the Entrepreneur!

That means you! You are the most crucial part of the business. Remember to take care of yourself in every state. Look after your physical, mental and emotional well-being.

It’s important for successful progress.

Your choice of food, amount of movement throughout the day, amount of quality sleep, and your emotional care are all a big deal when it comes to taking care of the boss.

It doesn’t matter what kind of business you have–whether it’s a blog, online business, a service, trade, shop, etc.

If you’re confused and can’t seem to figure out where to start, it’s likely you’re lost in at least one of these 5 mentally devastating ways you’re sabotaging your own success.

1: Mental Discipline

If your business is a ship, your mind is the mainsail. That means the kind of things you allow to blow into your mind will ultimately determine the direction of the ship.

This is why the kinds of thoughts you allow into your mind, the things you “dwell on,” are crucial to the success of your business.

As a young adult, I worked in a rigorous sales job. It required pitching customers as they walked through the door of the store. What I was selling was an excellent service, but cold pitching is still cold pitching.

I got turned down–a lot.

After awhile, my mental discipline broke down and all the “no’s” began to wear on my self-esteem and confidence in my selling ability.

This is why the business for which I worked had an unusual policy. It was required that every employee have a copy of the book, “The Magic of Thinking Big,” and in fact required us to bring it with us every day to work.

When I called in to report my awful sales totals halfway through the day, my employer gave me a chapter to read out of the book.

Reading just one chapter of this incredible, inspiring book completely changed my state of mind, recharged my motivation and ultimately helped me reach and surpass my sales goal.

It was that powerful.

What you allow into your mind, and what you allow to stay for awhile has powerful impact on you and your business.

If your thoughts are always munching on negativity, your expectations and then your actions will inevitably follow.

Your perspective, confidence and clarity totally depend on the things you’re allowing to live in your mind.

What kinds of thoughts is your mind snacking on right now?

  • “I don’t know if I’m capable of accomplishing this.” vs “I can totally do this!”
  • “I’m starting a little business, you know, just a side thing.” vs “There is no limit to how big this can get!”
  • “I’m not _____ enough to really make this thing work.” vs “I have EVERYTHING it takes! What I don’t have, I can learn and achieve as I grow.”

Which phrases and thoughts resonated with you? Pay attention to how you’re disciplining your mind to think.

2: Underpreparing

It happens all the time. One of the most common of the 5 mentally devastating ways you’re sabotaging your own success is by becoming inspired to do something… and then just immediately going for it.

If you’re a spontaneous person or highly ambitious, you might struggle with this more than those who take a more cautious approach.

Any good business will always have a plan, direction, and long-term plus short-term goals.

A good business will have structure. Structure requires time and preparation. Without a good foundation, a business will fail.

Think of your business as a building. A builder doesn’t sit up in bed one day and say, “I think I’ll build a house,” jump up, buy some lumber, and start nailing.

That’s ridiculous.

A builder will follow a blueprint. They’ll have a plan, a budget, and they’ll operate within that structure.

Your business is the same way.

It’s nothing short of sabotage to have a beautiful idea, and then not take the time to give it the preparation it deserves.

You will have enough challenges as you learn and grow without the added mess of failing to prepare.

Give your business the credit and respect it deserves. Take the time to prepare for it, to plan it, and then execute.

Self Analysis:

Are you really ready to execute? Can you answer these questions easily?

  • Do you have a complete breakdown and outline of your business and how it will operate?
  • What is your budget? Do you have the funds to get started? If not, how do you plan on getting those funds?
  • What do you want to see in your business in 1 year?
  • What do you want to see in your business in 5 years?
  • Do you have all the legalities, details and requirements of starting up your business ironed out?

If you cannot answer these questions confidently, watch out! You may not be ready to jump!

3: Overcomplicating

There are fewer things sadder than killing something off before it has the chance to even get started.

Overcomplicating is one of the fasted ways to do that.

If you’re starting a business, the most important thing to do is develop a plan.

However, there is a fine balance between planning and overcomplicating.

Get your business outlined on paper. Look at your goals and what you want to do. But don’t lose you in the details.

It’s easy to get carried away in all the details. Eventually, those details become so messy and confusing that you just want to give up.

You’ve effectively drowned out your motivation by overcomplicating things that would probably have just worked themselves out.

If it seems like everything has become overcomplicated and bogged down, go back to the basics.

Just do what your business was designed to do in an organized, well-planned way. All the tiny little technicalities will work themselves out as you grow and learn.

Self Analysis:

Are your habits helping you keep things simple and focused, or overcomplicated and overwhelming?

  • Can you break down your business plan and ideas easily when describing them to someone?
  • Do you get frustrated when trying to determine the purpose of your business and the basics of how it operates?
  • Are you trying to control every single aspect of your business, or are you willing to let many of the tiny, insignificant issues sort themselves out as you learn and grow?
  • Can you accept that there will always be curveballs, that you can’t predict everything, or are you trying to have a contingency plan for every possible challenge before it ever happens?

4: Unhealthy Comparing

Improperly comparing is a deadly habit. Not only is it unhealthy in a physical sense, it’s a bad habit to practice when it comes to starting your business.

Notice I said unhealthy comparing?

That’s because not all comparisons are bad. If you’re comparing yourself to where you want to be in 5 years and you’re doing it with a positive outlook, you’re motivating yourself.

On the other hand, if you’re comparing your young blog to the 10-year-old power blog that makes millions, you’re probably self-sabotaging.

You didn’t start 10 years ago. You’re starting now. There is no way to effectively compare your success to that of the other blog and get something good from it.

By all means watch what that blog is doing and learn from it so you can grow big, too.

Be super careful avoid weighing your own business against that other business to gauge your success.

That other business doesn’t determine your success. Your success is based on your own plan, which you prepared, remember? It’s based on your goals and your breakdown.

Not theirs.

One of the worst things that happens when you compare in an unhealthy way is that you can be influenced to sell out.

That means you lose sight of your own original idea and get caught up in what others are doing.

You’ll never feel great about what you’ve built or become if you try and measure up the what you think you see from everyone else.

Go dig out that original business plan and tack it on the wall. Look at it every day until there is a fire in your bones and confidence that you had it right the first time.

Self Analysis:

Reflect on these questions and see if maybe you’ve been self-sabotaging by comparing in an unhealthy way.

  • Do you feel inferior when you talk about your business to another business owner, blogger or entrepreneur?
  • Do you look at other, similar types of businesses and feel defeated?
  • Are you lacking motivation and avoid reading about your type of blog or business?
  • Is your original idea and passion drifting into other flavors that could change the direction of your business without a well thought out decision?

5: Not Taking Enough Care of the Boss

Burnout. The ultimate business killer.

Of all of these 5 mentally devastating ways you’re sabotaging your own success, this is the one that will persist, no matter how far you go.

Your ship, your house, your business, blog, dream, project... whatever it is… cannot go without you.

That means you’ve got to take care of the person responsible for keeping the fire alive.

As business owners, this was the first lesson my husband and I had to learn. We easily made the mistake of working more than 80 hours a week repeatedly without a break.

It didn’t take long for us to realize we were breaking down. What my husband loved and was so passionate about was the very thing that was taking over and wearing him out.

We started scheduling days off. It wasn’t easy, but we were forced to learn the art of stopping when it was a healthy time to stop.

The rest of life doesn’t magically disappear just because you’ve started a business. All of your other responsibilities will still exist.

Remember that, or you’ll be drained before you get very far at all.

It’s okay to give yourself permission to take some time off, to sleep in one day, to pamper or go do something fun.

You’re still you in there, a person who needs to rest and relax at times, to get away from the project.

Getting space is helpful to recharge and refocus and will ultimately be healthy and highly productive for your business.

Taking care of you is not only a smart business move, it’s wisdom. It brings out your best.

Self Analysis:

Here are some questions to determine whether or not you might be overdoing it a bit and hurting your business.

  • Do you wake up tired?
  • Is it getting harder to feel excitement and anticipation about your work?
  • Do you feel drained and lack emotion when it comes to your business?
  • When was your last day off (working remotely is still working)?
  • Are your other responsibilities and relationships suffering?

Self Reflection

After reading this, do you feel like you might have been self-sabotaging your own success just a bit?

It’s easy to do!

You’re not alone in this. Every business owner, blogger, and creator has dealt with at least one of these 5 mentally devastating ways you may be sabotaging your own success.

These are simply imbalances of the good habits gone too far.

Excitement and inspiration can easily become a lack of preparation. Determination and self-awareness are all too often the culprits that push us toward unhealthy comparisons.

See? Good things, gone too far.

It takes mental discipline to keep the balance and stay in the “healthy zone” of building a business.

Just remember, if you find yourself feeling lost, frustrated, or overwhelmed, it’s time for some serious reflection.

Take a break. Get away from it all. Look at it all from a distance. Gain some clarity on how you ended up here, and how you can get back.

And then, keep climbing.

My husband took the big leap in June of 2016. It was one of the scariest decisions we’d ever made. It wasn’t just a decision–it was a move, a jump. There were some things we knew, but there was a whole lot we didn’t know. Since then we’ve learn so much about business, entrepreneurship, and making stuff work. How It Got Started

We’d been married a year and a half. That’s not very long at all. I was working a full time job in the medical field as a certified professional, doing what I loved. Having that backup income gave my husband the confidence to start his business.

My husband, Adam, had been working a 9-5 doing meticulous work that he absolutely did not enjoy. Furthermore, he was terrible at it. We look back and laugh now, thinking about how he was trying so hard to be a square peg in a round hole.

June of 2016 was the big month. He took off. Well, it was more like he started. Because nothing actually took off.

Hindsight is 20/20, so here are 5 things that our now-perfect vision taught us and what you really need to know before starting a business.

Don’t Expect A Big Return During the First Year

When I say Adam started and that nothing took off, that’s exactly what I mean. We planned, we prepared, and we prayed.

That does not mean that massive success plopped into our laps. All that means is that we felt like it was the right decision.

We still had to start building from the ground. From nothing. It didn’t come easily, either. There were so many times we just wished his business would take off and the income would come pouring in.

But that just isn’t how good business is built.

Proverbs 13:11 says, “Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it” (ESV).

Searching for get-rich-quick-schemes isn’t realistic, and it isn’t wise. When it comes to building your blog or business, you need to understand that you have to build it up just like you would a sturdy house.

You start with a solid foundation and then you build upward, slowly but surely. All the parts of what you’re building have to be constructed correctly. If something isn’t right, you have to tear it down and start over.

This takes time, learning, growing, and a lot of hard work. So don’t expect massive profit during this season. It takes at least a year for things to start gaining momentum.

A year of no real profit does not mean failure. It means you’re learning.

Make sure you’re expecting the right things and have the right perspective about time.

Prepare to Make Some Serious Sacrifices

How we would have loved for Adam’s business to explode immediately. It didn’t. But it still required 500% out of us.

Every day.

There were times when I watched him work himself into exhaustion for very little return. This is where his vision and his determination became everything.

Adam believed in his business. He knew he was on to something and was prepared to make the sacrifice.

It also meant I needed to sacrifice, too. I was part of the team. Working my full-time job to help provide financial security was only part of the game. I learned how to shave our budget down like crazy and how to save over $500 a month doing these basic things.

I also learned how to have the ultimate yard sale and whatever else I could to earn extra cash, save, and budget.

Whether or not you’re part of a team, if you’re building a business, it’s absolutely crucial that you be prepared to sacrifice.

You’re going to pour your time, money, energy, and effort into making it work.

To get a business off the ground you need to understand what it’s going to take. It requires enough hours to make a 40-hour work week seem like a cake walk.

I can’t tell you how many people have since come to my husband asking for advice on starting a business because they don’t want to work 40 hours a week.

Adam’s response is very straightforward. If you can’t handle a 40-hour work week, then you definitely can’t handle building a business. It requires at least twice that.

Your Business Idea Had Better Be Good

Since you’re going to be making some serious sacrifices and you won’t see the benefit of those sacrifices for a while, your business idea had better be a good one.

Your business idea must be thought out and well-planned. Here are some things to ask yourself:

  • Is your business fulfilling a need that’s in high demand?
  • Is the market saturated with your type of business? (Think population, area, demographic and demand)
  • How are other businesses in your niche doing in your area? Are they succeeding?
  • What’s your plan to stand out? (Think branding, identity, P.R….)
  • What is your marketing strategy?
  • Is there room for growth, expansion and longevity?

Making sure your business idea is awesome doesn’t guarantee success, but poor planning and choosing a not so great business niche will certainly hurt your efforts and your business probably won’t survive.

Make sure your business or blog is something that’s in demand, that fills a current need, and is a space where you can flourish and stand out.

Does it feel like walking a tightrope yet? It should. That’s what it is.

Stay Ahead of The Marketing Game

What you need to know before starting a business is your marketing strategy.

This is the era of online marketing, and while technology makes it easy to put your name out there, it’s that much more competitive.

Before you ever launch that blog or open up for business, you should already have a marketing plan in place and you’ve got to make it count.

Think unique and creative branding, connection with your audience/clientele, and your strategy for promotion to gain traction.

No matter what your business is, you need a following. Where are you going to find it and how are you going to get it and maintain it once you have it?

These are detailed questions but they need to be answered before you start your business.

Which social media platforms will you use (it’s best to not use all of them when you’re starting out but rather do well on a couple)?

Every niche is different, and your type of business will determine whether Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Google, LinkedIn or other platforms should be your main focus.

Each social media platform has its own kind of law of attraction, so-to-speak. The same formula will not work across the board.

My husband’s business is local, providing a service to residents and businesses in our area. Because of that, he learned how to harness the power of Facebook and Google, and let me tell you he’s incredible at it.

For my blogs I’ve learned to use Pinterest since it’s the number one traffic driver to blogs.

When it comes to your business or blog, knowing how and where to market is crucial.

Love It Enough To See It Through

In order for your business to succeed it has to meet a demand somewhere. Choosing a niche willy-nilly is certainly not going to set you up for success. This is particularly true for blogging. Let’s just keep it real. Certain blog niches do better than others. Period.

Okay, so now we’ve established that your choice of business must be a thought out, strategic decision.

There has to be some balance to this decision. You still have to love what you do.

My husband’s business is flooring maintenance. Surprise! Yes, he chose to provide an in-home or business service that is considered blue collar.

And it does really well.

Why is that? Because Adam loves it.

Adam is not interested in real estate, finance, or accounting. He’s not interested in graphic or web design enough to make an entire business out of it.

Adam loves connecting with people and he loves moving and putting in some sweat. That’s his personality. Because he chose a simple business that he loves, he excels and the business is flourishing.

He could have chosen to build a financial company or an investment company since those both tend to pay high dividends. The reality? It probably would have failed.

It’s not his thing.

Your business choice needs to be something you love to do, something you’re willing to work at even when it’s not working for you yet.

You’ve got to love what you do or you won’t do it for very long when the going gets rough–and it will. Trust me.

Using wisdom, especially when you feel impatient about getting started, will only reap long-term benefits.
